6.0 Health and Safety

6.1 Accident or Illness

It is often difficult to decide if a child should remain home from school if he/she complains of illness. An objective indicator is elevated temperature. It is recommended that a child remain at home until his/her temperature has remained normal (below 100 degrees) for 24 hours. For the wellness of all students, parents are asked to use discretion in sending their child(ren) to school if any of the following symptoms are present: elevated temperature (above 100 degrees), skin rash, diarrhea, vomiting, strep throat, or evidence of lice. Students exhibiting these symptoms during the school day will be sent home from school.

In the case of an accident or illness at school, parents will be contacted to take the child home or to the doctor/hospital. It is important for your child's safety and comfort, therefore, that the information on your child's Student Emergency Card (see Section 2.5) be kept up-to-date.

No sick child will be sent home without the knowledge of the parent or authorized person. In the interest of the sick child, parents are asked to respond as promptly as possible when a child must be sent home.

Parents of students with any type of physical disorder or serious allergy should contact the principal, the school nurse, and the classroom teacher to ensure that they are aware of the situation and any attached special needs/requirements.

Cases of head lice should be reported to the school office immediately so that proper action may be taken promptly.

6.2 Medication

Whenever possible, medicine is to be given at home, and parents should request that physicians adjust medication schedules such that medication is administered before/after school hours.  When a child's health demands medication during the school day, the medicine must be brought to the school office as soon as the child arrives at school.  Teachers do not assume the responsibility for any medication.  Medicine will NOT be administered to any child without:

  1. The medication form (issued by a doctor) indicating the medicine to be taken.
  2. The parent's signature.
  3. The proper daily dosage of medicine marked with the child's name and time the medicine is to be administered.

The following restrictions also apply:

  • Aspirin or any pills must be brought to the office following the above procedure.
  • Ointments will not be applied by any school personnel.
  • Children must assume the responsibility of coming to the office or health room for their prescribed medication when they bring medicine to school.

6.3 School Nurse

In addition to being available to aid students in the event of an illness or an emergency, the nurse is responsible for the following:

  • Maintaining updated health records for all students.
  • Conducting hearing screenings (Grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 7).
  • Assuring completion of a physical examination (Prior to entrance into school, Grade 7).
  • Conducting vision screenings  (All grades annually).
  • Conducting scoliosis screenings (Grade 7).
  • Recording height and weight (All grades annually).
  • Recording required immunizations (Grade 7 - Hepatitis B and 1 dose of chicken pox vaccine).

6.4 Dentist/Dental Hygienist

The Pennsylvania School Health Law requires dental examinations for students entering grades K, 3, and 7; these grades were selected because they represent critical periods of growth and development in a child’s life.

While it is recommended that these examinations be performed by your family dentist, school dental health evaluations will be provided for students who do not furnish proof of a private dental examination within the previous six months. The necessary forms will be distributed at the end of the prior school year so that appointments can be scheduled during the summer break.

6.5 Fire Drills

A Fire Drill is required once each month in order to instruct and train the students to exit the school building quickly and quietly without confusion and/or panic.  Absolute silence is required during a drill.

6.6 Building Security

All doors to the school will be closed and locked during school hours.  Parents and visitors must use the buzzer at Door 7 to gain entrance to the building.

6.7 Playground

Every school day, weather permitting, the students enjoy an outside break supervised by playground monitors. Playground equipment is available at the discretion of the playground monitors.

Students are never to leave the playground without the permission of one of the monitors. Monitors are also the first point of contact in the event of accident, illness, or misbehavior.

Playground monitors are to be treated with respect and are to be obeyed, as are all staff members. When the bell rings to end the playground session, students are to move in silence to form a line in the designated place, and when released by the principal or playground monitor, the class - still moving as a silent line - proceeds to the designated door of the school building, where they are met by their homeroom teacher.
